What does the term "digital portrait" mean?
A digital portrait is a painting which is created using the latest in digital technology.  The artist
uses a digital paintbrush and tablet in place of a traditional paintbrush and canvas, carefully
selecting each type of brush and  medium  to best suit the feel of the painting.  Each pixel is
hand-painted using the original photo as a starting point for the painting.  Once the image has
undergone the virtual painting process it is printed on heavy canvas or archival fine art paper.

Does the computer generate the painting using a filter?
No, each painting is completed by hand, a time consuming process using the digital stylus as a
brush.  Each stroke is completed with attention to color and detail, preserving the likeness of the
subjects while giving a "painterly" effect.

What type of photo should I choose?
The best type of photos to choose should be those that you love which capture the spirit and
personality of the subject.  Review the before photos in the gallery for ideas on the type of photos
to select.  Clients will often send multiple photos during the selection process, we will call you to
discuss preferences and those which may work best for the painting.  For information on digital
photo .jpg size and resolution requirements see our "Send Photo" section.

Can I use a photographer's photo?
If the photo is taken by a professional photographer we must have a copyright release in writing
prior to beginning the portrait.

Does the photo have to be digital?
High resolution digital photos are preferred, however a quality scan of a traditional snapshot can
also be used for the portrait.  For further information on traditional photo requirements see the
"Send Photo" section of our website.

Can you take the photo for me?
Yes, if you live in the southern CT area we can arrange for a photo portrait session for an
additional fee.  We will consult with you on appropriate attire and setting for the portrait.

How long does the process take?
The painting process begins when we receive your photo(s)  and deposit.  We will contact you
regarding the preferences for your photo and painting, discussing the subjects, cropping,
background , etc.  The entire process takes from 4 to 6 weeks with an artist proof  e-mailed  to you
for feedback and approval prior to completion.
